For now, if you do not use electronic billing at all for any payer, there is
no requirement. That said, this is the direction everything is going so
there may be a time in the future where you will have no choice.

From a coding perspective, xrays include two components: professional (the
reading and interpretation of the xray) and technical (the taking of the
xray). Most chiropractors who take xrays on-site perform both of these
components and bill (code) the xray accordingly. Therefore, a radiographic
report should be generated in a timely manner just like any other service
that you perform. Otherwise, a payer could assert that you only performed
the technical component and reduce your reimbursement.

Great post. I routinely document my radiographic findings on my travel card by writing the angles and distances into spaces on an anatomical diagram, with a comments section below that has other information. I post these onto the travel card in a timely manner, but if notes are requested I translate this information onto a report sheet which states the date of the radiograph and the current date as the date of report. I can see how this could result in denials. Perhaps I need to use the report sheets routinely on the day of the radiograph.

Thanks Tom! Always good stuff. Love the way you balance reasonable sound advice to protect, but also encourage practice growth.

Every electronic clearinghouse will have to convert if they intend to keep getting their providers paid!
